Big Sandy Fact Sheet
  1. Created in 2003 from the consolidation of Prestonsburg Community College and Mayo Technical College Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) is one of the 16 colleges in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).
  2. BSCTC is a public, comprehensive education institution that provides access to educational, cultural, and social opportunities for residents of the Big Sandy Region which includes Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin, Martin and Pike counties.
  3. BSCTC was approved for single accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) on December 9, 2003.
  4. BSCTC has four campuses located at Hager Hill, Paintsville, Pikeville and Prestonsburg. These campuses consist of 13 buildings and have a total of 731,906 square feet of facility space.
  5. The College offers learning experiences for those preparing for an occupation upon graduation, for those transferring to a baccalaureate institution and for community members seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills through short-term classes or customized training. Distance learning capabilities extend the College's reach and allow flexibility to meet individual needs. Adult Education programs are available for those who need remediation or GED preparation.
  6. BSCTC offers more than 16 associate degrees and 22 diploma and certificate programs. Many of the degree, diploma and certificate programs have multiple options and certifications.
  7. For those students who desire a degree beyond an Associate degree, BSCTC jointly offers 2+2 agreements with Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University, Sullivan University, Lindsey Wilson and Midway College. Partnerships with businesses and industry also provide a valuable link with the community and workforce.
  8. Total student enrollment for fall 2004 was 4,673.
  9. BSCTC is among the 50 fastest growing two-year public colleges with enrollments between 2500 and 4999 students in the United States per data from the US Department of Education. (ranked 38 out of 1,121 colleges)
  10. BSCTC annually awards $4 million in student financial assistance with nearly 65 percent of its students receiving some type of financial aid.
  11. Tuition is $92 per undergraduate hour. In addition to being state assisted, the College has an active program to seek external funding for new and improved programs and services.
  12. Classes are small with a low student/faculty ratio.
  13. The faculty of the College is highly qualified and credentialed. Faculty includes 17 with doctorates, over 59 with master degrees and numerous professionals with national training certifications and significant technical experience.
