REMOVING BARRIERS TO COLLEGE ACCESS... INCREASING THE COLLEGE-GOING RATE
STUDENT ACCESS/SUCCESS ENDOWMENT
$1 Million

According to the United States Census, educational attainment at the Associate Degree level
rose 2% in the United States and 20% in the state of Kentucky during the past ten years.
Comparatively, Owensboro Community and Technical College's service area (Daviess, Hancock,
Ohio, and McLean Counties) achieved a 29% increase in attainment of Associate Degree
education.
How has OCTC contributed to this success? The December 2002 issue of Community College
Week ranked Owensboro Community and Technical College fourth in the nation in increased
enrollment for colleges of its size. Including workforce development training, the College's
overall enrollment has increased by 64% since 1999. We are proud of this national recognition
of our community, but we now need financial resources to meet the challenge of covering the additional 58% cost of education
not provided by state funds.
More than 100 deserving students remain on a waiting list for scholarship assistance each year. Annual funds from the Student Success
Endowment will help us continue to remove the barriers to college access by providing scholarships to talented students, support for
retention, and increased opportunities for those in the workforce who are struggling to balance home, family, and education.

"Most people of my generation thought education was a destination. It is clearly a
journey now, and we have to treat it that way. A Student Success Endowment is
important for the College. Money for education is something that we cannot ignore.
We've got to create opportunity for our young people, and it is incumbent upon us as
responsible leaders in the community to make sure that happens."
