Somerset Community College receives estate gift

Wayne County Outlook

The late Clellan and Leora Prewitt provided a generous estate gift to Somerset Community College to fund scholarships for SCC students in perpetuity. The charitable remainder trusts will be held by Cumberland Security Bank of Somerset, Kentucky. The scholarships will be known as the Clellan Prewitt Memorial Scholarship and the Leora Prewitt Memorial Scholarship.

Mr. Clellan Prewitt was the founder of the Bank of Somerset, now Cumberland Security Bank. He was also active in the development of agricultural economy and real estate throughout south central Kentucky. He worked side by side with his wife, Leora. Together, they owned and operated several tobacco businesses throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. They were also involved in the livestock markets in Albany, Monticello, Somerset and Science Hill, Kentucky. Mrs. Prewitt was a retired co-owner of the Curiosity Shoppe in Somerset.

Dr. Jo Marshall, President of Somerset Community College expressed appreciation for the gift on behalf of the College. "Mr. and Mrs. Prewitt's commitment to higher education will directly benefit students who attend our College. When I came to SCC in 2000, their grandson, Mac Godby, was chair of the SCC Board of Directors. Mac also co-chaired the Lead Gifts Committee of the Partners in Progress Campaign for SCC in the late 1990s. Mac and his family have been good friends of SCC for a long time," emphasized Marshall. "We deeply appreciate the Prewitts' generosity."

This gift brings the SCC Fulfilling the Promise Campaign total to over $3.6 million in gifts and pledges.
