PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY
My name is Vickie Norris, I am a single parent of one child. When Adam was just 4 years old, his father walked out on us and never looked back. January of 2003 I was in an automobile accident; I ended up having three months of physical therapy due to my injuries. I had a full-time job which I also lost due to the injuries I sustained in the auto accident. I didn't know what I was going to do, or where I was going to turn. Adam and I ended up moving in with my parents. Without the love of my family and friends, I would never have made it through this difficult period in my life.

I kept on praying about my situation and finally one day I ran into a friend and she suggested that I talk to Mary Fischer at Maysville Community College. Mary told me about the Ready To Work program and the benefits I could receive. Then we talked about the Jump Start program; this program offers a way for you to learn skills in math and computers. This is especially good for people who have been out of school for a long period of time. I attended this Jump-Start during the summer of 2003.

The Ready To Work program helps give you self-esteem, friendships, and a feeling of self worth that will last a life time. They gave me a computer that was absolutely free to me as a student. They helped me find work that is related to my field of study. Without the Ready To Work program I don't know where I would have ended up. The only skills I had for a job was a CNA license, which I have possessed for the past 10 years. I am seeking a degree in Surgical Tech, I chose this field of study because I am interested in how the body works on the inside. I mean, can you imagine holding an actual human heart while it is beating in your hands?

A great aspect that happened to me while at the college was the day Mary Fisher called me and told me that I had just been chosen for the Kentucky Colonel's Scholarship. I was so elated; I have never won anything in my life! My first semester I had a 3.0 grade point average. I have achieved more from college than I had ever expected to.

Without the Ready To Work program, I would not have been able to attend college at all. I am very thankful for the Ready To Work program and that I got to meet such interesting people.
